An exact match is defined as follows:
- Social security number matches, or
- First name, last name, and date of birth match.
In order to provide the most information possible, our criminal record reports by default will include additional records that meet the following criteria:
- Last name and date of birth match, and the first name searched on is similar in some way to the defendant's middle name.
Since some of our customers prefer to see exact matches only, we have an option to do that on the report, and a matching e-mail copy can be requested as well. It is always possible to go back to the default state and show all possible matches by using the Report History link.
It is important to realize that even an exact match cannot guarantee that the records returned will match the person you searched on, particularly for common names. Because social security numbers are present in only 18% of criminal records, we do not require it to match. Also, the computer will not know the sex or race of the person you are looking for. This is a general issue and not specific to SentryLink. We provide as much defendant information as possible to help you make a determination if a particular record is relevant.
