SentryLink offers services to businesses and consumers. Consumer searches, usually done to check out a neighbor or a friend, are mostly unregulated. Business searches done for employment screening, tenant screening, or for any purpose that could affect someone's credit, fall under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). To distinguish between these types of searches, we require that a date of birth be provided for any FCRA-related search.
For business users, many sites say that they are FCRA compliant, but beware. In most cases they are FCRA compliant only if their reports are not used for employment screening or the other areas to which the FCRA applies. Read the fine print carefully. If the site does not say that it can correct errors in criminal records, it cannot be legally used for employment screening or most other business uses. Many sites attempt to evade this issue by simply posting a link to the FCRA notice.
As always, you should check with your own attorney. SentryLink does not provide legal advice and will not be held liable for any actions taken or not taken as a result of what is stated here.
